Main Stocking

 

A dairy herd was sold off in 2000 as in most of Northumberland and much of County Durham, there are very few dairy herds. After FMD a suckler herd was established. There are currently 70 cows split into three groups: AAx, Lim x and Stabilisers. Bulls used are Charolais, Limousin and Longhorn. All stock are sold finished and replacements are home bred

800 Hefted SwalexB being upgraded to Lanark type BF's

200 SwalexBF drafts, ex Carlcroft

200 Ewe Hoggs

120 Scotch Mule Hoggs

Tups all now Lanark BF's

30 Tups, Lleyn, Texel, BFL and Suffolk ex pedigree stock

Small group of experimental Llyns

40 Pedigree Suffolks all in the flock book Reference Scheme

12 Gimmer Hoggs

15 Tup Lambs

The Suffolks and Mule shearlings lamb in January with the rest in mid March

15% of the lambs come off the hill finished, 200 gimmer lambs are retained and 60% of the lamb crop is finished at Kirkley Hall
