The Farming Challenge
The Partners
Northumberland College at Kirkley Hall is the main provider of agricultural education and training in Northumberland and has a long history of providing training in countryside related subjects, with industry-experienced tutors. The Kirkley Hall Campus has two farms run on a commercial basis, providing a base for the sheep flocks and suckler herd and also has extensive machinery workshops. Extending over 1500 acres, the two farms provide a practical environment in which to study, with Carlcroft providing practical experience of farming in an upland environment. There is also a purpose built National Sheep Training Centre and small animal centre. The College are dedicated to serving the training needs of the farming communities of Northumberland and beyond now and in the future. |
The RMIF runs a series of business improvement activities for farmers. It is run by and for farmers and has one simple aim on farm - to improve the profitability and lifestyle of the farming community. Over the past 4 years the RMIF has set up 100 Farm Business Groups where discussion and benchmarking are used to help farmers improve their bottom line. These club members are the key participants in this project, being able to out into practice all the great ideas and innovations that have been born out of the clubs. Both the National on Farm Manager, Clare Wise and the Northern Manager, Mike Keeble hail from the North and have a strong commitment to restoring Kirkley Hall's profile as a leading agricultural college and are excited about working together with the College through this competition to achieve this. |
